The Puerto Rico Hotel and Tourism Association recently elected Pablo Torres, general manager of the Caribe Hilton Hotel, as its new Chairman of the Board of Directors. Torres will lead and guide the Association’s endeavors for the next two years. This change of command took place the celebration of Tourism Day at the Intercontinental Hotel in Isla Verde.

“I take on the presidency of the PRHTA Board of Directors with much energy, a positive Outlook, and the deep desire to contribute to tourism activity and economic development for Puerto Rico,” stated Torres. “We will work hand-in-hand with the public sector to advance an agenda to benefit tourism on the Island while we revitalize the Association’s Strategic Plan to continue to provide value to our members and business partners.”
Similarly, during the president’s luncheon of the outgoing Board of Directors, Miguel Vega passed the baton of the presidency after presenting the Association’s achievements and performance during his tenure at the helm of the PRHTA.

“It is convenient to highlight what has been beneficial for the industry and what we have achieved during these years, in addition to what we have worked with jointly to benefit tourism. We were the precursors in the conversations for establishing a destination marketing organization for Puerto Rico. There was resistance to the model, but the Association worked in cooperation with government administrations to advance this project and finally, last July, we witnessed the establishment of this entity.

The creation of Discover Puerto Rico is a leap forward in the marketing and promotion of Puerto Rico. We are still making adjustments and transacting certain aspects, but we are on the path to achieving a non-political organization whose primary objectives are the effective promotion and constant marketing of Puerto Rico as a destination and safeguarding the best interests of the Island’s tourism industry,” the executive explained during his message.

He also explained that as an organization, the Association was a key player in defeating the attempts to legalize video lottery and its ramification. From the beginning of the legislative attempts, up through appearing in court to stop the attempts, the Association has been proactive in preventing this terrible damage to the industry. He also stated that the Association will not lower its guard and will remain vigilant in this matter.

“Our casinos are an integral and essential part of tourism activity on the Island. During the 2017-2018 fiscal year, the casinos injected more than $275 million to the Treasury to market and promote Puerto Rico, to the University of Puerto Rico, and to the General Fund. It is an achievement that for the past twelve years of attempts, these legislations have not become a reality. We will continue to protect the casino hotel industries,” he indicated.
During this luncheon, Frank Comito, CEO of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), participated in a chat with Miguel Vega about the benefits of association, regional alliances, and industry opportunities, among other topics regarding best practices that benefit tourism. In addition, he explained the One Caribbean brand and its The Rhythm Never Stops campaign, the result of a collaborative agreement between the CHTA and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO). The event was well attended and included an educational component with several seminars, an exhibition and B2B with appointments that culminated in a networking cocktail for PRHTA members and attendees.
